We're looking to upgrade from our antiquatated Trimble 4800 gps system to something more modern and I was wandering if anyone had suggestions. I am interested in either a Trimble or Tocon unit with a cellular modem but other than that I am kinda lost on what I really need. The primary use of the system will be surveys of infrastructure downstream of dams such as roadway crossings, FFE's, etc. in which I am primarily interested in the elevation.

How accurately do you really need elevation? GPS elevation accuracy is not its strong suite.

Within a couple tenths would be satisfactory.

"couple tenths" of WHAT? furlongs? fortnights?

Cellular modems are great, as long as you have a signal. Any deep rural assignment you'll likley want to keep a hold of the old Trimble and Bluebrick radio.

I'd say to investigate a unit that is compatible with your total station equipment and data collector for that. Not a requirement, but tends to make life easier on a crew that has to switch between the two.
