Running Pro/E locally / remote location

Is it possible to run Pro/E "easily" from a machine that is not connected to a network 100 percent of the time. I travel and would like to be able to do some work on the road. My company has a seat allocated for me so I can switch from Acad, but it seems like every possible obstacle keeps preventing me from making the switch.

It is possible but very slow unless you shell out some serious bucks for Winchill, that is awsome at remote engineering. Your company have a big checkbook?

Even without Windchill, it would be a very expensive hardware nightmare. Your IT dept won't speak to you for a year afterward.

Although, a representative of Rand Worldwide just told me that PTC is breaking the Windchill product into smaller, easier to implement chunks, which might be the ticket for you. That way, you wouldn't have to implement Windchill in it's entirety (which is mega $$).

If you have a locked license, just install the server component and the client (Pro/E) and you then have a standalone license. I use Intralink and set it up to run when my remote (laptop) users are in the office. If you have floating licenses, you're in for a tough time I'm afraid, unless you re-configure a license to locked.

You do not need Windchill!

You would want to put the license and server on your laptop. Then you could setup your desktop at work to look for the laptop as the license server. (When the laptop is on the network.)

Also you could use VPN to access your network if the license server is allready on the network.

If your license server is on the network, that effectively rules out installing a locked license on the laptop, since that would involve reconfiguring one of your floating licenses to a locked license, thereby removing one of the floating licenses from the pool...possibly angering coworkers when they can't get into ProE due to no available licenses.

VPN is an alternative, but depending on your current setup, may not be feasible. VPN will get a network license easily, but if your data must be checked in/out for data control (PDM) reasons, I doubt that you will want to wait while entire assemblies, parts and drawings are downloaded to a laptop just to make a few changes (then you have to upload everything when finished). Any VPN solution has to be COMPLETELY supported by your IT department, otherwise you will not be given enough access to VPN in the first place (whether you VPN using a modem or via internet).

If either of these solutions are not feasible, you should just wait until you are in the office to do your ProE work or have the company purchase a locked license specifically for you and your laptop.
