I've got an old drawing w/ SA 280 listed as a material. It was replaced in 1953 w/ A 335 I believe, but I'm not sure which grade as I can't find any more information than that.

I'm looking for some help. Thanks.

Brian

You are correct; the SA 280 specification was withdrawn in 1953 and replaced with SA 335. The title of the SA-280 Specification is "Seamless Ferritic Alloy-Steel Pipe for Service at High Temperatures"

The grades in the SA-280 Specification that carried over were probably;

Grades P1, P2, P5, P5b, P5c, P9, P11, P12, P15, and P22

You need to verify the chemical composition if you suspect SA-280 vintage material because of the choice in grades. This can be done using a portable alloy analyzer to check for Chromium and Molybdenum contents.

Additional information;
According to my 1952 Edition of ASME B&PV Code, Section I on Power Boilers, the only listing of alloy steel under this specification (SA-280) was 1/2Cr-1/2Mo.

The SA-335 specification at that time listed the following grades;
P1,P2,P3b,P5a,P5b,P11,P12,P16,P17,P21 and P22.

I have one other source of information - an ASTM Standard - which is at another location. I will check tomorrow.

Well...., I did locate my 1952 ASTM Standard Edition on Ferrous Materials back in the office. Apparently, ASTM A-280 had already been replaced by SA-335 in the 1952 Edition.

On the drawing, double check to see if there is a number after SA-280. The 1/2Cr-1/2Mo steel composition under SA-280 in Section I would be P2.

What exactly is your situation/application regarding SA-280 material.
