SA516-70 Heat Treatment Condition Marking Requirements

Hello All,

We have purchased an SA516-70 plate. I am a little bit concerned because heat treatment condition is not marked on the plate, should this raise any issues? Or is it okay?

I have attached a picture of the marking.

There should be "MT" somewhere. Are there any markings stamped into the plate? At this thickness it is required to be stamped, unless you specifically requested it not be die stamped.
 
“MT” is not marked anywhere on the plate. 2013 SECTION II, PART A in SA-516/SA-516M Para 5 it states that “ Plates 1.50 in. [40 mm] and under in thickness are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition.” could this be the reason?
 
If you did not order the plate subject to normalizing and the plate thickness is less than required to be normalized, it will be in the as rolled condition most of the time.
 
Thank you for your reply folks. Honestly I come from an Electrical background and all this is new to me so just for me to know what I am talking about before approaching the AI, as rolled means it’s not heat treated. If thickness is less than required to be normalized (heat treated), then there shouldn’t be any marking on the plate neither “G” nor “MT”. Which makes the marking of this plate completely fine bearing on mind that we need the plate to be as rolled. Is this correct?
 
If you did not request normalized plate, then it will not be normalized at this thickness and will therefore not have MT or G. MT is applied only when the plate has undergone a heat treatment.
 
Did you check the test report?
According ASME SA 20 clause 19 the plate manufacturer shall issue a test report. According subclause 19.3, normalizing, if applied, shall be reported including temperature ranges and times at temperature. If no heat treatment is given in the test report then the plates are not normalized.
 
Zeecloud, your understanding of the marking is correct. See SA-20, 13.1.1

In the test report it states “ Normalizing Rolling for below & Including 40 mm Thk Plate” it also mentions “Furnace Normalized for above 40 mm Thk Plate
Supply Condition: Furnace Normalized at 900 ± 20°C, cycle time minimum: 1.4 minutes per mm thickness + 10 minutes”

So it’s not normalized but normalized rolled. Should it be marked with “NR” then or is it not mandatory?
 
Confusingly stated, but it's telling you that the plate is not furnace normalized. It is controlled rolled with the final reduction performed at a normalizing temp.
 
“Nprmalized rolled” is not recognized as a heat treatment by ASME, therefore no specific marking for heat treatment. A marking “NR” is not conform to ASME SA 20.
