Sacrificial components are known as what? 1

I suspect a tagging problem. We normally use stainless
steel on most of submersible motor tags but one of our
rotation tags what found to aluminum. After 60 days of
submergence the tag had a thick coating of white growth
as though it had been attacked.

The other tags looked good. Of course we will go to all stainless steel tags but my question is - Was the tag a
cathode or anode?

Wayne:

Oxidation (dissolution) of metal occurs at the anode. Reduction (deposition) of metal occurs at the cathode.

If you can wipe the corrosion away from the tag (tag still intact and being plated by another metal), the tag was the cathode. If the tag itself was corroding then it was the anode.

Thanks for the quick response. Keeping it simple makes life a lot easier. It tells me what I need to know. I just wasn't sure which part was doing what?

So the aluminum must be the anode since it corroded. We will change it over to stainless steel and everything should be fine.
