Hello All,

I am trying to understand what would be the best seal (or gasket or soft seat, you name it) material for a safety valve.
Here are the data:
Field of operation: Sterilizers autoclaves.
Fluid: Steam, 2.2-2.4 bar(G) @ Temp ~135°C.
Safety valve set pressure is 2.8 bar(G).

In addition, I would like to reduce simmering as much as possible.
I am currently have few options in mind: EPDM/PTFE/VITON.
But I would like to figure out what would be the best seal (or gasket or soft seat, you name it) material for the intended safety valve.

Thanks,

Your best elastomer seat material selection at that pressure/temperature is Viton with a maxiumum 75 durometer rating.

To reduce simmering you need a minimum 0.35 barg gap between operating and set pressure (applies to set pressures below 4.83 barg), as recommended by ASME. Simmering may also be influenced by other factors such as inlet pressure drop, wrongly sized and selected valve etc.

*** Per ISO-4126, the generic term
'Safety Valve' is used regardless of application or design ***

*** 'Pressure-relief Valve' is the equivalent ASME/API term ***
