Hi,

We have been using SAP2000 for some time and now we came across the following issue:

Is it possible to run checking/verification of selected parts / elements of one large structure or just for the entire system?

The point is that we are working with a large model that we need to verify/check in parts and not at once. How can one do this with SAP2000? As far as we understood Groups are not working for this partial checks/verifications? Is there any workaround to achieve our desired workflow?

My first klugy idea for this is to save your model as another name and delete everything but the part you want to check.

My second one is to restrain all of the nodes except for the ones at the part you want to check.

I'll be interesting to know if there is a slicker way.

In other software packages is just selecting the elements for which one want to perform the Verifications / Checks and it is done. We can not understand how this simple and strait forward option is not addressed in SAP2000...

It is not an option to make simplified models because of the fact the lead us in the first place to build a global FEM model (use to most correct stiffness as possible to understand the load paths throughout the structure). We can not jeopardize the stiffness in any case.

Look forward to inputs from experienced users that overcome this issue.

I don't think I understand what you mean by "check."

Are you talking about computing the strength ratio unity check for only some of the members? I'm pretty sure SAP2000 could do that.

In my first post, I was talking about checking the behavior such as stiffness or stability of individual parts.

Here's how I understand it:

1) Define your groups using the main menu command Define > Groups.
2) Assign specific elements to each group by selecting them then using the Assign > Assign to Group.
3) When you go to do the Steel (or concrete, or whatever) Design, using Design > Steel Frame Design > Select Design Groups to do your code checks only for certain groups. This runs the steel design.... but only for the group(s) you designated.
4) Then when you're looking at your output Display > Show Tables, you should only see the design results for the specific group selected in item #3.

Now, I ran into some trouble getting this to work because I had first run the steel code check for all groups. I had to clear all my results before doing step 3 again to get it to only show the results for that group.

JoshPlumSE, indeed that should be the expected behavior but unfortunately it is not.

In SAP2000 we can make 2 types of verifications so called Design or Check. For Design one use the tool for select/propose the most suitable section profile for the given loads automaticaly. For Check is just to plot the utilization ratio, not changing the section by itself.

The point here is that select Design Groups seems not working for Check (aka verification of the structure as it is) only for that given selected Groups. For large structures this is really annoying, because takes a lot of time when what we need is to check only part of the structure or a couple of elements.

Anyone can help here?

Hello STRUKT,

Excuse me if I understood something wrong. But cant you select them easily thanks to `select by groups`? Then sap2000 can only design them. It can also show tables for selection only etc.
