hello, has anyone encountered problems with saving draft files as PDF's? I am using vesion 19 and have applied patches 1-8, but I get a file translation error. Any help on this topic would be greatly appeciated.

Thank you

Hi,

did that ever work? If so then I would suggest to remove all
files that have been left in your \Temp folder.

When it's the first time you are using the function then:

first make sure that SE has installed the 'SolidEdge Velocity PS Printer 2.0'
check Start --> Settings -> Printer to see if it's there
When this is not the case run the program:

C:\Program Files\Solid Edge V19\Program\PrinterInstaller.exe

After that verify that the printer is installed. When not, there is a
file within the \Temp folder SEPrinterInstaller.log which might contain
further information (on failure the message might not give any further
clue where to look. Most likely you will find a one liner tht says:
'... module not found ..'

Do you have other PDF Printers like Adobe Acrobat installed? I know
of one case where Acrobat (full) was installed prior to SP2. This
prevented the SE printer to be created. After uninstalling SE and Acrobat
and then installing SE it did work. Reinstall Acrobat has no negative
side effect -- both printers where fully functional afterwards

I've no other ideas what this error might cause. When the above
does not solve the problem then contact GTAC

I prefer to use the Save as .pdf directly into a draft but that's only if a don't have many files to convert. Then the velocity printer comes handy.

So just go to a draft then under file / save as / select "Adobe Acrobat document (*.pdf)" from the pull down menu (the same place as you would go for saving as a .dwg) and then you will be prompted for a file name (it should be the same as your draft by default) and there you go.

Don't get confused "Save as .pdf" is really a save as and not a print.

Regards

Patrick

I can confirm that the save as pdf works in V19, but only with service packs installed.
Strangely enough I tried to do it today on a workstation that had SE19 re-installed a few days ago, but no service packs and the option is not there in the 'save as' list.
I put SP6 on and it worked fine.

/Edit

you may print to the 'Velocity Printer' but the resulting file
will be in PostScript format regardless of the ending you
did specify. Any existing equal named file will be overwritten
without warning when just 'Print' is used without the option
'Print to File' is set. This file must then be converted to .PDF
by Distiller or any other program. This is consistent with other
(virtual) PostScript printers.
BTW: when you have never printed with option 'Print to File'
set the output will go to SE's program folder! Otherwise
the last path set when this option was active will be used

Don,
I get a file translation error when trying to Save As PDF in SE on Windows XP64.
I've tried double-clicking PrintInstaller.exe but nothing happens. I don't have 'SolidEdge Velocity PS Printer 2.0' listed in my printers.
Any suggestions ?

bc,

check my first posting: do you have other PDF-Printers defined
i.e.: Adobe Acrobat (full) which creates an 'Adobe PDF printer'?
This may prevent the VelocityPrinter from beeing installed. I've no
further clues why the printer won't get created. And when this
printer is not available a 'Save As PDF' will fail. My suggestion is
to file an IR on this issue or install one of the free PDF-Printers
i.e. 'cutePdf' or 'PDF-Creator' ...

Hi Don,
The only printers I have defined are an HP, Epson and Microsoft Document Writer, and there is no log file in Temp folder.
With my login I should be able to add & remove programs, but SE was installed by someone else with different user priveliges. I'll get them to try and add the printer for me.

Thanks.
