Save assem part in position

Does anyone know how to save the position of an assembly part within the part file external to the assembly?
For example, I have positioned a part in an assembly. I would now like to have that location stored within the part so that no matter which assembly I open it in, it goes back to the same location relative to the absolute coordinates.

I'm sitting in an NX training class and we can't seem to figure it out.

Could you just move the part to that same location in the part file itself? Go to Edit move object. Then move it to the same 3D space as it is in the assembly.

Create a WCS while the assembly is the work part. Make your part the work part and create a WCS in the same position as the previous WCS. Remove your part from the assy and add it back in, aligning the WCSs.

1) the question is quite unusual. I have difficulties imagining situations where a component always should have the same location.
2) similar to EWH's proposal, but, make the component the work part. Save a Datum Csys in the Assembly's 0;0;0.
Then when using the component in a different assembly , use constraints to align the component Csys to the assembly's Csys.

That is what I came up with, but I was hoping that there was a more robust way to do it. Thanks for the help.

Its fairly common in automotive to design components in their "car-line" positions, although items such as fasteners etc are designed at their own absolute CSYS.

It might be easier to just re-model it in installed condition so it will come in in the same position in every assembly.

If I need the part "In Car Position" I use top down assembly, where I add component to the assembly to build the assembly.Then create your block using the geometry in the assembly. The coordinate systems are all in the same place, in assembly and in each component. Then if someone had to do some cutterpath on a mold for example without the lifters in, then later decide you should have had them in, you could import and they would pop into place

Thanks bmar and Khim, you are exactly correct. We are normally given datums to work off of from the studio designers which we use to create the part data. But, occationally I start working on something before I have car space datums due to project time constraints. If you work in automotive you know what I mean...
