Is there a method in NX5 to save or export an entire assembly with its subassemblies and all children files to a new directory?

It seems that in the process of conceptual design of a large machine assembly I always have a lot of files in the original directory that for what ever reason are no longer used. They may be step files or files that have had the name changed at some point. Eventually after the design is complete there is a need to provide the files used in the assembly to a customer. It is time consuming to sift through the directory and delete the unused files.

Another solutions is to download a free copy of UGZipC, a utility which will take your current open assembly and create a Zip file containing copies all of the components in the assembly. This will work even if the original files are not all in the same folder and the system has used Search Folders to find the components, which is often the case when you use Part Families or the NX Machinery Library, but UGZipC will take care of all of that for you.

To download this free utility(for Windows only), go to:

Note that despite what it says at the above site, this utility will work with all recent releases of NX (I've tested it myself with NX 6.0, NX 7.0 and NX 7.5 and found no problems).

I have installed ugzipc and had to modify the ugzipc.men file to menu selection would show up. The original file was insering it after !AFTER UG_FILE_EXPORT_INVENTOR_3D which I don't have. I changed it to: AFTER UG_FILE_EXPORT_DIRECT_MODEL which is the JT entry.

Now it shows up and I get a dialog box but it does not seem to function. My guess is that I don't have the Open api execute license which appears to be required.

How disappointing. It reminds me of Pro-e where we often found that we needed to buy an additional module for basic functionality. It appears that the same is true of NX.

Hi

Try using the assembly clone functionality

DMiller01,
i too haven't got inventor, so i tried your mod, but from having a tab called "orphans" on the top toolbar, which gives me access to the "after inventor...." and "UG ZIP", before your mod,.............after doing it i lost that & couldn't use the application, any idea why?

moog2,

The "UG ZIP" also showed up in my Orphan tab when I first installed the program. I had to look at some other .men files to determine the actual name used for the "JT" entry under export. This is what my current ugzipc.men looks like:

VERSION 130
!
! This script will insert UGZipC in the File->Export menu
! To be placed in your startup-directory
!
EDIT UG_GATEWAY_MAIN_MENUBAR

!AFTER UG_FILE_EXPORT_INVENTOR_3D
AFTER UG_FILE_EXPORT_DIRECT_MODEL

BUTTON UGZIPC_BTTN
LABEL Zip Assembly...
ACTIONS ugzipc.dlg
END_OF_AFTER

I commented out the inventor line and added the ...direct_model line underneath it.

If for some reason this does not work for you I would expect you could go back to the original upzipc.men file and once again have access to it under your orphan tab.

Although I see it under my export menu now and I do get a dialog box, that appears to be the limit of its functionality on my system.

DMiller,
I've fixed it for what i want by......
from "customise" (toolbars), I've added the "ugzip" command to a toolbar, and linked it to a bitmap, then, still in "customize" have deleted the "orphans" tab from the top menu, now i only have that command, but you could create a button for that as well if you want.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and instruction. I was able to use the ugzip grip application and it worked great for what I need to accomplish.
