Saveas replaces parts in assy in NX6

Anyone know a way to NOT have a part be replaced in an assy if I happen to do a saveas on a part that is current used in a assy model I have open? NX always replaces the part in the assy with the new number. I dont always want this. And our assemblies are so big I dont want to have to close one everytime I do a saveas just to make a new number.

Thanks

I know of no practical way to avoid that. The best that you could do would be to open a second NX session and then open the part of interest and do a 'Save As' from that session.

BTW, why are you doing the 'Save As'? Have you made changes to the part? If so, why was this done in the context of an Assembly in which you have no plans to use this new Component in? After all, if you wish to make a change to Component and then do a 'Save As' and yet not wish to change the Assembly, just DON'T save it after doing the 'Save As' on the Component.

If i want to do that, i just save the part (to include any changes) then go out into windows, and copy and paste the file, re-name it there, and then back in NX, do a replace component, on just that part (not all in session), if indeed you want to change that one to the new version, then make the changes to it if you want any.

You might have a look at the 'clone' function'.
Instead of using a 'save-as', clone the needed part before you modify it, substitute it by the new cloned part - you have there the choice to substitute only on occurence of a component - and then work on the substituted part...

John, suppose you have multiple assemblies open that share some of the same components. In one assembly yes I want to perform the save as and have it updated to the newly saved component in the ANT. But I don't want this substitution to happen in the other assemblies in session. Can you do this? I don't want to close the other assemblies and reopen them. In this senario I am working on several similar assembiles at the same time.

No, SaveAS will change the number in all open assemblies. You are best to only have the one assembly that you want to change open when you do the SaveAs.
The alternative is to NOT save the other assemblies when you close them all out.
