I searched for this and couldn't find a good reference, so...

I'm trying to find a way to save a view, in Modeling or Sheetmetal, etc, such that only a subset of entities are displayed, preferably with some preset orientation on screen.

For example, lets say I have a model consisting of a simple cube. I create an extracted copy of one of the faces (Insert > Associative Copy > Extract > Face), which is parallel to the XY plane. Now, I want to create a "saved view", which when activated, would show ONLY this extracted face, preferably perpendicular to the XY plane. Going to any other default view would show all the other geometry (subject to whatever "Show" and "Hide" settings were set).

How can this be done? Thanks!

Somewhere near the end of the question you mention wanting to be perpendicular the the XY plane. Well that would be the top view so you unless you have a skewed WCSYS that you wish to reference instead you don't need to do anything.

Assuming you just want to save any view in any old orientation then view>operation>save as and give it a name of your choice. No go to your list of cameras and you'll see that it has been added and you need only double click to switch between.

As for wanting to save which entities are filtered as displayed of not then I guess technically in an theoretical sense you could use layers and set visible in view. However back in the real world it is one of the most annoying things you could do to leave a file that way for another operator to have to guess what technique you used to hide things. The functionality really only seems to have any real justification is supporting legacy data from pre version 9 of UG.

I'd suggest to create some groups or layer filters that you can switch on and off fairly quickly. As is seems that the main reason would be for convenience sake the balance to be struck is between making you life easier and everyone else's a total pain if you head down the visible in view route. I have to tell you the technique exists since I figure that you asked and somebody will pass on the info, but it probably also for the good that it comes from somebody who'll tell you frankly that the result provides no visibility of how you organised the data and should therefore be avoided.

This is something I have also wondered about, can different views save different hide/show states of the model. I know that in NX sheetmetal that when you use the Flat Pattern command that a new view is created that just shows curves of the flat pattern, I've noted that these curves are in a group. Where as all the other views show everything else but these curves. So how can you recreate this and have the freedom to choose what is or is not shown in each view?

Yes there are a few functions that create curves as visible in view. The old silhouette curves used to do the same thing. I'm not certain in later versions. Personally I'd rather they didn't the designers of the software obviously disagree.

People using it deliberately in our office have been mercilessly bullied out of that behaviour in flagrant contravention of the company OH&S policies.
