I'm running 2013. Is there a way to save part / assembly files
so someone using 2012 can open the files... a "save as" option....
or do I need to create the files in 2012?

thanks

Thanks ,...... appreciate the follow up.

Toycept, if you have someone that needs to edit the part and they are on 2012 then you will be far better off to model it in 2012. SWX2013 can always open and use the 2012 version, but not the other way around.

I think the current functionality of opening a 2013 file in 2012 SP5 is totally useless. The part doesn't even come in as a dumb solid. I would rather SWX had done the following to at least make the 2013/2012 interchange have some utility:
1. Let 2012 SP5 open a 2013 file and either bring in the 2013 part as an inserted base part or as a dumb solid.
2. Let the 2012 user make changes to the part in the form of new features. This would not be the same as parametrically changing the existing features of the 2013 part since those features and their tree would not even be visible.
3. Let the 2013 user then bring in the part modified by the 2012 user and absorb the changes made by the 2012 user.

Now that would be a useful interchange until/if they ever make true backward compatibility, which I doubt will ever happen.
