When I first started learning UG in the mid to late 90's, I remember being told that it is best to save the files in wireframe. Something to do with shading taking up more space or something. I dont remember exactly why.

These days I notice that when it is shaded, my product moves smoothly but if I have it on wireframe, motion can be a little choppy. This makes me think there is more information being worked with to accommodate all the many lines and shading seems better.

Does it make any difference whether a file is saved in wireframe or shaded these days? I personally prefer to keep shaded just because of the choppy motion of wireframe when moving it around.

It shouldn't make any real difference today. The issue years ago had nothing to do with the file size since whether it was saved shaded or not, that was irrelevant. The issue for many people was the performance of the hardware. If you saved it shaded, when you opened it again, you would have to wait for the shading to be complete whether you wanted to see it that way or not. If you saved it in wireframe, it would open as fast as it could and if you didn't need to see it shaded, you'd have saved some time. However, with today's hardware with their graphic engines being part of the display systems, it's pretty much a wash in terms of performance no matter what the shading status was when you last saved the model.
