Schedule 40 & 80 A316 Stainless Steel Pipe Column Design Values

Hi Folks,

I designed pipe columns that are supporting a steel beam but the contractor wants to use A316 stainless steel schedule 40 pipe columns. I could not find any values about schedule 40 pipe columns, and I designed columns for 3" dia. std. pipe column. Does anyone have any information or reference about the design values of Schedule 40 & 80 design values ?

Both the AISC and ASCE have design guides for stainless. Off Google. Not sure if there is a free download for the entire manual. You can get a few sections as I have done in the past. Bending allowable is less for stainless 304 than Steel(about 16.2KSI), so I would think it would be less for column buckling.
If your looking for a Column load chart for pipes, like in the AISC Steel manual, it may be in one of the above. If your looking for a approximate answer you could conservatively extrapalolate, and apply a reduction factor. If too close then I would get the above stainless codes.

I believe the doc number is 827-13

And two comments.
-SS will ave double the thermal expansion of CS. If this is where it can get hot and cold you might need to consider that.
-If the connection is exposed to the elements then you will need to isolate the connection to minimize galvanic corrosion of the CS.

Ya, definitely look at the design guides. Remember that SS has a somewhat nonlinear stress-strain curve, and this effects buckling the equations. So it's not just a matter of reducing allowable stress.
 
Good point SocklessJ I forgot to mention that. In the begining I used the values of AISC with a reduction factor till I saw that. It is better to use the stainless codes.
