I have a file(several copies) that my client has sent me that UG won't open because I get an error: "unable to find schema transmit file". The client opens it without a problem on his end. What am I missing?

is the file really UG or is it an file from another CAD system, only renamed?

As far as I know it is a real UG file

the schema transmit files are used on update an old ug/ nx file to update to current version. Is your installation ok?
The transmit file can be found under the ugii\ugschema.
Maybe a installation or a file access problem.

What it means is that the part file was last saved using a NEWER version of NX than the one that you're currently running.

The 'schema transmit file' contain the information needed when updating the data-structures of an older file when opened in a newer version of NX. In this case, all the system knows is that the file was NOT saved using the current version of NX and it can NOT find a scheme file for the version in which it was last saved, which almost always means that the file was last saved in a NEWER version.

My installation must be ok, this is only the third file out of hundreds over the past three years that i've had this problem. My schema folder has over 2900 files,so i don't know if i'm missing anything - is there supposed to be a file specifically named 'transmit'?

So if it's saved in a newer version(even just a couple maintenance updates) the older version can't do anything with it?

Within the same major release, you should be OK. For example, if you have NX 6.0.2.8 installed, you will still be able to open files saved in NX 6.0.3.6 or even NX 6.0.4.3, when it's released later next month.

However, if you were running say, NX 5.0.6.3, you will NOT be able to open files saved in any of the NX 6.0.x.x releases.

We're talking about 4.0.4.1 versus 4.0.1.3

That shouldn't be a problem.

However, I'm not sure that you've got your versions listed correctly. There never was any released version designated as NX 4.0.4.1. If you have a file which was saved in that version, if had to have come from someone at Siemens PLM as that was an internal development phase. The official release was NX 4.0.4.2.

Now that being said, why are you still on NX 4.0.1.3 in the first place?

We're a small company that was forced to downsize a few years ago and our maintenance package was one of the victims. We are also still on NX4 because that is what our customers are running. The 4.0.4.1 was the number my client read to me over the phone so that might not be 100% accurate, but that may be splitting hairs.

Can you start a new session, attempt to open one of these problem files, and after you get that error message, go to...

Help -> NX Log File

...and when the listing window opens, go to...

File -> Save As...

...and save the file and then attach a copy of it to your post?

If you do this, I will have the people responsible for our file data-structures look at it. I talked to them and explained what you had reported, but without seeing a syslog they could not offer an explanation as to how something like this might happen.

i did what you suggested and here is the log file

OK. Upon examining the syslog our people were able to determine that indeed that was a problem with NX 4.0.1.3, which was subsequently fixed in NX 4.0.2.x. If you can't get an update, please contact the person who is supplying you with the NX 4.0.4.x part files and have him run a full Part Cleanup a couple of times on each file before saving them and retransmitting them back to you. This might remove/correct the problem data which can not be accommodated by NX 4.0.1.3.

Thanks for the help, I'm working on both solutions- we'll see.
