Scraping 1

Gentlemen,
I need your support. Actually, I am new in mechanical inspection, I would like to know when I plan to make scraping for a pipe, & this pipe have two sizes 8” & 10”. What should I do to use scraper thru the pipe effectively or what size should I use 8” or 10”??. & is there any way to scrape them both effectively? If yes what’s the way to do this object.

What is the goal of your "scraping"? If it is to remove built-up scale and corrosion products then you are unlikely to have much luck with mechanical scraping a dual-diameter line. The 10-inch scraper will not fit into an 8-inch line, and an 8-inch scraper will not be very effective in the 10-inch line.

One technique that has worked very well if you have a sample of the material you are trying to remove is to send the sample to BJ Services and they can formulate a gel pig to cut it. Their technique is to use a poly pig (in your case use 10") followed by their gel pig material, finally followed by a second 10" poly pig (I would use a pretty agressive poly pig with a hard surface and built in brushes for both poly pigs). This technique has had great success in very difficult operations, but it often needs more than one run. Even with multiple runs it is a lot cheeper than running hundreds of scraper runs.

If you're just trying to shift liquid then a 10-inch poly pig will work.

is an Oil & Gas service company that has a pretty effective pipeline/gathering-systems division (unlike their major competitors Schlumberger and Haliburton).

I'm not sure what you didn't get above, so I don't know what part of my post I need to simplify.

Think of BJ's gel pig as a "goo" that has a very high capacity for attracting pipeline scale into its matrix (go to the link above and click "Pipeline Services" and then click "Gel Cleaning" to see a picture of the goo). You run it between pigs to make sure that the goo stays in contact with the top of the pipe. They won't sell it to you without knowing what you are trying to acomplish so they can taylor the goo to your problem.

If you still have questions I'll be glad to try to answer them. If I were you I'd call BJ before I got much further.

I agree with zdas04 (David). Please define "scraping" and it's purpose.

Zdas04 is assuming that you have a completed pipeline system. If you have something else then please describe it.

BJ Services is a pipeline services company. You might want to check out their web page for all the services they can provide.

zdas04 is referring to a pipeline cleaning method after hydrostatic testing where a gel is run through the pipeline between pigs in order to dry the pipeline and to pick up any debris left after fabrication. Very effective.

Bader may be referring to running a pig through the pipeline after testing but we await further details of what he is trying to do.

BJ has also had good success in the last few years with remediating scale in old in-service pipelines. That is why they want a sample of the stuff causing problems so they can tailor their goo to the problem.
