I'm working on a project for a food company making caramelized popcorns. One of the challenge is provide air cleaning method for a popcorn mixer, in which the popcorns got coated with caramels.

Current exhaust system does not have anything, so tha caramel residues are collected on the roof. Imagin that...

I wonder if anyone has any experience with this special application. Thanks!!!

I am presuming that the popcorn is placed into a fluid bed and sprayed with molten sugar (caramel). What is the particle size of the caramel "dust" being carried out of the coater. Is there an alternate method that does not spray the cramel, e.g. a pan coater?
Given the stickey nature of the dust, I would recomend cyclone sepatation or wet scrubbers.

Thanks Mark,

I'm not sure about the caramel "dust" size. But they are really sticky. DO you know any manufacture that deal with this kind of situation?

Companies like Trion Inc. make kitchen exhaust equipment with electrostatic precipitators that have was down cycles for the collection cells. I wonder if they could help you. This is an interesting scenario... I am interested in the outcome. I always like cracker jacks. hehe

Forget my comment... sugar might not be a good idea for those units. Opportunity for fire and such...

Good Luck.

Second thought on the cyclone, have had trouble with sticky whey powders in cyclones, and possibly not the best for your situation.
Try a search on wet scrubbers. Not sure but DCE Vokes and other filter/polution control Co's would be able to help.
