If a welder is qualified to a P-1 material, are they qualified to any other P-No.? (Such as P-8)

Yes for P-No 8 base material. Please see ASME Section IX, QW-423.1

We are standardizing our WPQ testing to:

Process: GTAW/SMAW (GTAW root & interpass, SMAW Cap) Fillers: F6 and F4
Position: 6G
Base Material: P-1 to P-1,
Pipe Size: 2" Sch. 80

This seems to create a very wide range of welding variables.

Would an AI disagree with using this WPQ for a GTAW, S/S code weld?

jimwaa;
For welder qualification you really need to understand essential welding variables under welder performance qualification in Article 3 of ASME Section IX. Do you have a copy of ASME Section IX? Have you reviewed it?

If you don't completely understand ASME Section IX work directly with your AI. Most of the ones I know are willing to provide guidance, all you need to do is to ask up front.

If you wish to Qual. welders to this.....do you have a qualified WPS for same?

You can "wordsmith" quals. but it would be wise to consult with a Welding Eng. prior to proceeding

Yes we have a WPS and PQR for this WPQ test.

I asked our AI about the issue and he approves the WPQ test. Thanks for the tips.

jimwaa,
You may qualify a welder on P1 material with an F6 filler metal as you described and that welder is qualified to weld P8 materials within the deposited weld metal thickness range limits with the GTAW process. While this is a "cheap" way to go, it may not provide proper evidence of a welder's ability to produce acceptable welds in stainless steel, especially thin wall stainless. What you save in welder qualifications may be far exceeded by what you spend for repairs. Many employers require welders to also demonstrate their abilities on 2-inch to 4-inch diameter schedule 10 stainless steel to provide better evidence of a welders abilities.
