Secant Pile - Tiebacks

For Secant piles, what is the best way to install tiebacks?

Does the contractor have to cut the flange and reinforce it prior to placing it in the hole to prevent compromise of the arch created in the primary pile (if they need to chip the secant to flame cut and reinforce the flange)? ....a sequencing issue.

or is it better to use 2-Cx spaced with battens so the tieback is in the center with no chipping required?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

InDepth,

Our experience is that it is better to prefabricate a through-pile hole w/reinforcement in the structural section and place it in the hole to the desired depth. Otherwise, you will need to install standoffs for a waler on the chipped face of the secant pile structural member, as it is very difficult to fabricate a through-pile connection for tiebacks after the pile is installed.
