Section hinge line length vs view size 1

NX5-6,

When creating a section view in drafting, the length of the hinge line always defaults to the width of all objects whether those item layers are displayed or not.

Ex: I have a part on a fixture. I create a section view then set the fixture layer off in that view so just the smaller part is displayed. Update-views. The hinge line is still as long as the fixture even though it's not displayed.

Is there a way to shorten the length of the section line relative to the length of the objects in view? (Section line style does not affect this).

One minor (or possibly major) note: The view I'm section from is a detail view if that makes a difference.

Edit section line, choose the 'move segment' option and pick one of the ends of the section line (with the arrows, not the hinge line) select a new location for the arrow and repeat for the other arrow if necessary. Update the section view, it will shrink accordingly.

That's the way I do it.

As best I can describe the behaviour is the Detail views are presumably just full sized views bounded by objects (i.e. usually a circle). If you go into expand member view then you'll realise you can navigate beyond the boundaries of the view border. I guess it therefore interprets the size of the model rather than the view bounds.

As others have posted it seems that the easiest way is to add the section first and then edit it by editing the section line using move segment to push the two arrows inboard closer to the bounds of your detail view.

Cheers

I thought I replied yesterday with a "thanks, it works" but apparently it didn't post... but thanks, it works!

Guys, I was informed by one of our younger users here that changing the length of the section line can be done on the fly.
Add section view, select parent,
Section view “slider box” opens
Pick section hinge point. Verify the section line is orientated properly,
Move the cursor in a perpendicular direction away from the section line, all the way to the edge of the viewing window. This deactivates the cursor’s attachment to the section line.
Slide cursor along the edge of the window to the slider box.
The 3rd window from the left is Section Line. Pick Move Segment. Adjust window view to see section arrow. Pick an arrow and release MB1. (This is not a click and drag). After releasing MB1, move the cursor to eliminate unwanted data at that end of the view. Click and release MB1 at the desired location. Do the same for the other arrow.
Select Place View icon in slider box and indicate the view location. You may have to redefine the view boundary to further eliminate unwanted data.

Cool! A star for that wecurb!
