PG-58.2 states that all BEP connected to a boiler for any purpose shall be attached to one of the types of joints listed in PG-59.1.1.1 (A tapped opening), PG-59.1.1.2 (Bolted flanged joints including those of the Van Stone type), and PG-59.1.1.3 (Welded ends of the butt or socket welding type.

Is there any place in the Code that will allow the use of a nonstandard connection, such as a Grayloc hub assembly type fitting? B31.1, which has technical authority for BEP, seems to have concessions for nonstandard connections, but Section I seems to override B31.1 in this instance.

If B31.1 allows it it can be used.

I can understand that in general for BEP, but it seems that ASME Section I has jurisdiction in this case, since it is BEP connecting to BP. ASME Section I doesn't seem to allow for nonstandard fittings in this application, based on the use of "shall be" in PG-58.2.
