Dear guys,
I have a question about UG-93, hope somebody can help me.

Acc. to UG-93(a)(2), For other product forms
(-a)the material shall be accepted by the manufacturer as complying with the material specification if the material specification provides for the marking of each with the specification designation, including the grade, type, and class, if applicable, and each piece is so marked, or

My question is :
If the manufacture is doing receiving inspection for a pipe material (SA-106 Gr.B).
The pipe was marked only with 'SA-106 Gr. B', is the pipe acceptable acc. to UG-93(a)(2)(-a)?

No..read SA-106 and SA-530 for the marking requirements.

Dear oknow,

1. Yes, when read SA-106 and SA-530 more strict requirements will be found.

2. If the manufacturer specify marking requirement in PO, the PO requires: the required marking shall be acc. to UG-93(a)(2). Is it acceptable for the marking 'only SA-106 GR. B'?

3. For me, I really don't understand the real code requirements for UG-93(a)(2). Meet What kind of situation that UG-93(a)(2)can be used?
Could anyone interpret? Thanks in advance.

I provided the answer. The PO needs to follow the ordering requirement in ASME Section II for the material in question. Check with the AIA.

Dear Oknow,

Since all the requirement in ASME Section II need to be followed, why not the code just simply require to follow the material specification? why the code address a paragraph UG-93(a)(2)?
what is the real requirements of UG-93(a)(2)?

SA-106B Satisfies UG-93. Trouble comes when purchasing as required by your QC manual. You haven't really purchased SA-106B if it hasn't met the marking requirements of the specification(s).

Standard Designation: BPV Section VIII Div 1
Edition/Addenda:
Para./Fig./Table No:
Subject Description: Section VIII, Division 1 (1986 Edition, 1987 Addenda), UG-93(a)(2)
Date Issued: 07/01/1988
Record Number: BC88-122
Interpretation Number : VIII-1-89-02
Question(s) and Reply(ies):
Question: Do the requirements of UG-93(a)(2) allow for cut lengths of pipe, such as SA-53 Grade A or SA-106 Grade B, to be acceptable for Code use provided each piece is marked by the Manufacturer or processor with the specification designation, including the grade, type, and class if applicable?

Reply: Yes.

We have found UG-93(2)(b) to be the easier route. Pipe comes in with heat# and manufacturer info, as well as about 3-4 other things (including A106.B in some form). A test report from the manufacturer is also provided, matching heat# from the mill to a test report certifying compliance. Quality system takes over for internal tracking and materials management.

Dear David339933,

Thanks for your interpretation. But still confused, during cutting lengths of pipe, it seems that is the material marking transfer (UG-77), NOT the original marking requirements (UG-93).

If the vessel manufacturer can not really purchased SA-106B which the marking requirements not meet the material specification, where can UG-93(a)(2) be used?
Could anyone give an example for the use of UG-93(a)(2)?

Thanks
