Got a pocket penetrometer and made this "cheat sheet" to help me in the field. Looking for feedback from those familiar with this tool, I have not used it in the field. From reading not really sure what value it has or when I would use the readings. Looking for other things that might be handy to have on the sheet.

Nice summary sheet- thanks for sharing.

I've always just taken the numbers on the penetrometer shaft multiplied by one hundred as an approximation of the allowable bearing pressure- no point in being meticulous with a probe that only penetrates a quarter inch deep!

Then again; I've only ever used my pocket penetrometer to confirm what I already know- it takes care to apply the data in isolation. From my experience, the "allowable bearing pressure" (I hate the term, it's wickedly vague) derived from the pocket penetrometer is often very different from that obtained empirically from a dynamic cone penetrometer. So if you were to run both tests, and perhaps a couple others just to complicate things further, your correlation would probably be weak and you'd end up cherry-picking your result anyway!

Cheers,
Mike

It's an index tool and not for design!

Might be useful for a person that is not normally evaluating soil field testing and sampling, but for part of the things you take along for day to day test borlngs or other soil tests, I see no use for it. Just extra stuff in your way.
