segmention in ship model testing

Dear all,
I have an doubt regarding ship model testing , It is observed that the ship model testing for slamming, whipping phenonmeneon is carried out for "Segmented" model.I am working on Whippping analysis problem and came across different papers which is showing segmented model.
Does anyone knows why is it carried out with segmented model, instead of countinous model?

The first paper I found

used a continuous beam model. So your alternative hypothesis seems to be unfounded.
