Hi all, I wanted some guidance from the experienced engineers here. I am reviewing some pipe supports at a waste water treatment plant for compliance with seismic requirements specified in the National Building Code of Canada . I have attached a picture showing some of the supports.
The design seismic lateral load that I have calculated on the pipes is 21 lbs. This load is applied in the horizontal that results in the most critical loading for design of the supports. The current supports are just vertical and I believe are not adequate for seismic requirements as the transverse load may put the threaded rods into bending. I don't have experience in the design of seismic supports for piping. My approach for the design of the supports thus far has been:
1. Look at Unistrut Seismic bracing catalogue.
2. Choose product and determine maximum spacing for transverse and longitudinal bracing.
3. Determine capacity of the seismic supports for the design loads I have calculated.
4. Specify bracing system, spacing and details.
The problem I am running into however is the data provided on the website is for steel pipes. I am not sure how to figure out maximum spacing for bracing requirements. Basically I am kinda stumped. Some bracing ideas would be awesome.
Here's some input data:
1. The piping is a double containment system consisting of a 3" PVC Sch 40 pipe within a 6" pipe of the same material. The 3" pipe contains Ferric Chloride acid with a density of 1.46 g/cm3.
Any input is appreciated.
