We are looking to start some work with designing stairs in California. ASCE 7-16 13.5.10 states that the stair connections need to accommodate the seismic relative displacements. With these displacements occurring in any horizontal direction. AISC Design Guide 34 gives very few typical connections for this case. Are there any typical connections that someone can provide to get a better understanding of what the code is requiring? Is there a decent resource we could use? Are you restricted to bearing plate type connections that allow for the displacement in any direction and what would a slotted connection for a stringer look like to provide displacement in both directions?

The critical direction is parallel to the stair (i.e. stretching or compressing the stringers).

All I know is P/A and Mc/I
