Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone has a good reference that discusses how to choose the optimum arrangement and type of the bracing members in a braced steel frame?

Also, is there a rule of thumb for selecting an adequate number of bracings?

Thanks a lot!

It's a bit dated from a code perspective, but this document lists some pros and cons for different brace types and configurations (Link).

Thank you very much Deker for providing me with this invaluable reference!

That was a good reference. Also consider eccentrically braced frames. Usually the building architecture dictates the type of bracing system. Also, serviceability considerations can drive a particular system, some resulting in stiffer structures than others. About five years ago, I designed a building (24W x 72L x 14H) supported on columns at an elevation of 16 ft above grade, so essentially a building on stilts. The columns had concentric X braces. This year, the owner wanted to enclose the ground level with personnel doors and garage door, and be able to drive a forklift from one end to the other. As a result, I had to remove the X braces and replace them with eccentric braces.
