Kindly guide me to understand the applications of Mechanical seals as per API 610 .

I would like to know which seal plan is selected for which application .

please give me some useful book references or Web site links .

I suggest that you contact a reputable mechanical seal supplier / manufacturer, they will have everything you need.

i think that the major factor you shall start from, when selecting a mech. seal, is the property of liquid you are pumping (purity, toxicity, flamabillity, ability to form crystals, etc.).

crg, thanks a lot . I think I did check mcnally before i pasted my problem

I want more details on applications especially where seals for dirty liquids are pumped .

I have API 610 and what I have come across is only Plan 11 not beyond that

regards

what is wrong with contacting a reputable seal supplier, these guys are in the business of applying and selling seals for all applications. Or get a good pump book or book on seals and do some research.

Mechatronic,
There are a number things to consider when selecting a mechanical seal for an API 610 application;
Liquid Pumped
Temperature (very important)
Solids ( per cent)
Is the liquid agressive
Type of Pump being used
Is there a vacuum
Discharge and suction pressures
location of pump
Speed

All of this can be overwhelming but it's really not hard once you get into it.
If it agressive- use a material that will be compatable
If you need a pipe plan for dirty pumpage you can choose from;
PLAN 31; recirulation from pump case thru a cyclone separator delivering a clean fluid thru a cooler to the seals and putting the solids back into the pump suction
PLAN 32; injection to seal from external source of clean fluid.
PLAN 33; circulation of clean fluid to a double seal from an external circulation system.
You also have Plan"A" thru Plan"L" for cooling water piping and others as well, using throttle bushings, external seal reserviors, dead ended blankets ( for methanol, external fluid quench and barrier fluids.
You have some good seal people out there but be aware they there to sell you their product and it could be costly if your not careful. All API 610 Applications use an API 682 mechanicl seal.

Checman - Excellent Site and very practical info on Flowserve hand book . Thanks a lot

Jimbo - Many thanks for you painstaking efforts and knowledge sharing.

My Regards to all of you !

I wouls also recommend reading API 682, which is a standard that covers mechanical seals for pumps in use in the petroleum refinery industry, ie API 610 pumps.
