Self Certification to the ISO (000 Standard 1

Once an ISO compliant Program has been developed and implemented, can a company self-certify as being ISO compliant and put that on any material related certification?
Stated another way, I am a machine shop owner and the products I supply require a certification indicating the items meet the requirements of the Purchase Order. My quality Program has been audited by my customers and meets ISO-9000. Is there anything in the ISO world that would specifically exclude me from putting on my certification "The items were processed in accordance with (my) quality Program which meets ISO-9000" ?

You need a 3rd party Registrar to certify you as being in compliance.

Who knows that your quality program meets ISO 9000? Don't misunderstand me, but you think it does and your customer beleives it does (and probably both are right) but that means nothing in the ISO 9000 world. As written by MadMango you need a notified body who confirms that.

There is a common misconception that an outside body is required. Suggest you both check out the ISO website. There is no requirement for any outside certification by customers or independent certifying bodies.

Whether your customer is satisfied with your procedures is entirely up to them. The purpose of ISO 9000 is to enable an organisation to keep control of its internal processes, and although an external audit and/or certification may improve credibility, it is by no means a requirement. It does not provide or require any specific external quality requirements.

I believe what I read on the ISO website is that the third "option" is to have an independent certifying entity assess the Program. It appears the order of preference is inline with rational thinking: I develop/implement/audit my Program, my customers audit my Program for compliance and acceptance and, then if I so choose, a 3rd party could become my certifying agency.
