Sending drawing files

Hi guys,

We are on a network, and wondering what is a good way to send people on the network drawing files that are able to be viewed and updated, since the parts are on the server.

Also, if you have a detached drawing, can you convert it back to an attached drawing to change dimensions?

Also, If I wanted to send someone who has solidworks a drawing, do I need to send him all the parts and assemblies for him to change a dimension? Is there a way around it?

Yes, you would need to send the supporting parts/assemblies, since the drawing refers to those to create the views. A good way around that is to export the drawing into a non-SW format such as PDF, DWG, DXF, etc. But the person receiving the drawing won't have the ability to change dimensions except on the drawing itself (not the part).

Regarding the server, I would think you wouldn't so much "send" them the files, but allow access to the files. That way, you don't have drawings and parts at differing revision levels floating around without documentation. Since it sounds like you want edits to occur, this sounds quite dangerous from a document control perspective.

It would be much safer to use PDF or better still an eDrawing which can be marked up & returned.

An alternative is to set up a conference/internet meeting where applications can be shared.

I seen the edrawing on the taskbar. What is the advantages of it?

Main advantages of eDrawing is that it gives the viewer both 2D drawings & 3D parts/assemblies without the overhead of needing all the associated files.
If you have the Pro version, comments & notes can be added, measurements made & shown.
STL files can also be made from the eDrawing parts.

Is there a use for detached drawings, if you have edrawing?

I usually just email someone a shortcut to the files I want them to look at on the server. In our case, it makes no difference if the end reciever has the full SWX of just viewer, write access or read only. Everyone can see the same files, and none of those files exist anywhere else unless someone chooses to make a copy.
