How far apart are the bars and over what range of distance?

The bars are in a rack next to each other. The purpose of the sensor is to locate the center of each bar so the robot can pick it out of the rack utilizing a magnet mounted on the same robot. The range it would need to detect would be approx. 6" ,down to 2" when it would lower down to pick up the bar. There are about 30 bars to a layer and about 8 layers of bars in a rack.

The only thing that would have that kind of resolution would be a vision camera, coupled with a capacitive or inductive proximity sensor.

Would a laser displacement sensor be suitable for use here?
You may want to look at Keyence models LB-301 or LK-501, for example, to see if this technology is suitable.

For iron bar use "inductive proximity sensor"

Magnet may not work -- the bars may stick together...
The accuracy requirements are fairly modest.

Mount the sensor on a vertical slide attached
to the lifter magnet assembly , so while you
search for the highest point (center ) of the
bar it is lower than the magnet but lets the
magnet to be lowered.
