Shaft material for use with one way bearings? 1

I am having problems with galling on a shaft which has a 4mm id One way bearing running on it. I am assuming the problem is because the material being used isn't hard enough. This part is currently being made by an out of house manufacturer and I would like to specify a new shaft material but I am having trouble finding specific information about what shaft material should be used.

I am currently thinking of 1050 steel Q&T @ 400F with the bearing surface then ground to final size. I would appreciate any assistance.

Usually the bearings run on a hard surface about 58Rc hardness. I do not think your 1045 stl has that hardness. Try 8620 carburized stl or 4340 nitrided. It is preferable to use 8620 stl. These bearing journals need to be ground, as you have already done so. If any questions see <

Shaft size recommended to be 3.992 to 4.000mm
Hardness 58 HRc, case hardened OK (effective case depth 0.8mm min), or through hardened.
Have you considered using commercially available miniature linear shafting? Depends what part of the world you are in.

I think you might want to look at some of the
Loctite products. If it is galling, you must be
having creep at the shaft and bore. Would like to
hear from others about using Loctite as a binding
agent of the bearing to the shaft.

There are a number of different types of &quot;one way bearing&quot;. Some have an inner ring - some don't. Some have keyways in the ring, some don't. The context of the post suggests to me that this one doesn't have an inner ring, but unless I am misunderstanding diamondjim, he seems to think it has an inner ring. Could someone clarify that point ?

No inner ring. The bearing in question is 4mm id 8mm od and the rollers run directly on the shaft.

Torington and INA make small, needle roller based roller clutches and roller clutch bearing devices in the same format as a drawn cup needle roller bearing. These generally run straight on a shaft.

However, STIEBER and others make one way devices based on ball bearing sizes, as well as their other SPRAG clutch range.

I woudl assuem from the 4mm shaft size that marman has one of the needle roler types.
