Hello!
The company I work designs water pumps. The water (usually at 104 ºF) is sealed by a rubber sealing.
The problem is that within short amounts of time of running the shaft gets worn by the action of the rubber lips.
The shaft material is AISI 304. I think it's not hard enough to withstand the rubber sealing wearing. I have two ideas to overcome this.
1) Build it in AISI 410 (or any other martensitic stainless steel), instead of AISI 304 (austenitic).
2) Apply Nitriding on the shaft surface, in order to increase its hardness.
What would you suggest?
