I am a machinery reliability engineer. I am developing a standard for shaft repair. I want to define what sorts of damage to certain areas can be repaired using HVOF, Flame Spray (metalizing), Sleeving, Welding, Belzona, etc. I want to take into account the service conditions of the shaft: wearing area under pump packing, areas under interference fit parts such as impellers, ball bearings or coupling hubs, bearing journals in sleeve bearings, etc. Is anyone aware of existing standards that might be helpful?

The Classification Bureaux have a great deal of knowledge with regard to all types of shaft repair, propeller shafts being a typical area for example. Try Marcus Cridland at ABS London, E-mail 'mcridland@eagle.org'. Other CBs are Lloyds Register, DnV, Bureau Veritas, and so on,

API Recommended Practice 687 "Rotor Repair"- Published in September 2001, covers shaft repair, among other areas.
