I am looking for shaft seals to be used in a gamma radiation environment. As I understand, perferred materials are EPDM and ethylene-acrylic (Vamac). None of the big seal manufactures seem to be able to help unless I purchase a production run. I have new design application and also need to retrofit purchased parts with acceptable seals (gearboxes etc.). Anybody else solved this problem?
Thanks.

This is very common for seal people. If its not in their stock runs then you are SOL.

Call Tri-Tec Seals, Inc.

Tell him Wayne Lovison from Toyo Pumps told you to call
have him call me at 815-806-1414 when you are done.

I use these guys when I have special projects and a limited amount of seals required.

I think 5 minimum order is there low end and they are very reasonable.

Good Luck

Any luck CY2J with your initial inquiry. I'm facing the same scenario and would like to know what you found from your inquiry. Thanks.

So far in my search I've found the following useful info:

John Crane has cartridge type contact seals that may work (though the seal material may be affected by radiation and thus may require regular maintenance). If leakage is acceptable, a simple labyrinth seal may work (no maintenance is required for this type of seal). The labyrinth can be designed with a specific number of "lands" to control the leakage. Only problem is that the leakage may increase if the shaft is not in motion.

I've had the best luck with JM Clipper. They have been the most accomodating for low quantities in EPDM.
