Can anyone give me an idea about how to design poles for a shape sail. Basically I think I need to calculate the wind loads applied to the pole. What design code I need to follow? Then I need to design a footing for each pole. I plan to use round steel poles but how deep the pole needs to go into the ground. Do I need rebar cage and concrete in the hole with the pole?

Go to ASCE 7-05

Figure 6-21 on page 74. I would start here and read. Looks like you are going to have to use Method 2 for the wind.

Regarding the footing, more than likely it wants to be a pole footing (no pun intended here), but with the pole itself attached to the concrete pole footing with a bolted moment connection.

Mike,

Thanks for your help. Do I need soil test data to design the pole footing?

If you do not have a geotech report recommendation, then look to the 2006 IBC Table 1804.2 for these values.
