Hi, could someone help explain the formula Av = A – 2btf + (tw + 2r)tf
but ≥ ηhwtw. Am I correct in assuming we only use the formula Av = A – 2btf + (tw + 2r)tf if it is larger than ηhwtw

Your interpretation is correct abuh11. The larger of the two expressions for shear area is used.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
