I've searched several other threads that seem to agree A380 is considered a ductile material, in which case it would obey failure theory under MSS or DE criterion. If that is the case then its shear strength should be .577Sy or .05Sy. However, when I look up properties for A380, several websites actually list the yield strength as being 23000 psi and the shear strength to be even higher, at around 27000 psi. How is that possible? Is it because aluminum is less ductile than steel therefore its shear strength does not follow the 58% or 50% of the yield strength rule?
