Dear Everyone,
I am new to eng-tips forum. This is my first question in this forum.
I am designing a building with columns and shear walls. Without shear walls, I am getting huge rebar percentage in columns. When I introduce shear walls, I am getting minimum reinforcement in columns and shear walls are failing. Increasing the thickness of shear walls led the thickness of 900 mm which is impractical. How can I design the structure such that column and shear walls share the load equally?
I am using flexural stiffness modifier of 0.7 in columns and 0.8 in shear walls as recommended by code.

Theshear walls and columns attract load relative to their stiffness. As shear walls are a lot stiffer than columns, they will attract a lot more of the load. Fortunately/unfortunately, that is how structures work!

@rapt Thank You for your reply.
My next question is about the framing of shear wall into beam. Should the width of beam be larger than the thickness of shear wall so that wall frames into the beam or it can be smaller than the thickness of wall?

You can do either so long as:

1) The joint is detailed thoughtfully and;

2) Your modelling assumptions are a reasonable approximation of real world behavior.

Most often beams will be wider than the supporting shear walls. That said, a 900 mm shear wall is pretty damn thick so, in your case perhaps that will not be the case.
