Shock Chlorinating Artesian Well 1

Looking for tips on method of shock chlorinating my artesian well. It has tested positive for either sulfate reducing bacteria or iron bacteria. The well is 186 feet deep in a 6 nch steel casing. The artesian pressure raises the water to approx. 5 feet above ground level.

The public health agency where you are located can probably provide you with adequate information. Here is an example. You probably should use someone that is familiar with disinfecting wells.

Disinfecting an artesian wells is not much different than disinfecting regular water well. However, you will need to pump the disinfecting solution into the well.

 
Thanks for the tips. I checked out the websites and there is good info on amount of chlorine and such. Do you have any ideas on the logistics. I read one deal about putting calcium hypochlorite tablets into a perforated pipe and lowering into bottom of well. I guess I would need to weight the pipe down with something. Do you know anythin about this method?

I am also wondering about the overflow when I pull the cap off.

Is there a well pump in the well or outside? Have you ever taken the cap off?

Sounds very much like my well & water system. Every 6-8 months I start getting a rotten eggs smell, most noticeably from the kitchen sink. So I disinfect the well & water lines. 200'+ deep well, 6" casing. Pour 2-3 gallons of bleach into the well. Run a hose from an outside faucet back to the well and circulate the water until I can smell bleach at the hose end. Then run each faucet & toilet until the chlorine smell can be observed. Let sit for a few hours, then run the hose down the driveway and let the water run until the bleach smell begins to dissipate. Minimize the amount of treated water that reaches the septic system. Done.
