There is a difference.

Short and long ar referring to standardized building lengths. For European this would typically be as an example F4 and F5 lengths according to former DIN 3202, F4 (short) now series 14, EN 558-1.

Go to the homepage and datasheets from a good supplier in your country/state and you will find the corresponding lengths and standards.

thank you gerhardl I'll try to go to the homepage from a supplier of my country!

Hello Luciates,

You can find additional information in thread 408-159561 and thread 408-168031.

The difference is the length. Those lengths are tabulated in B16.10.

Some folks like to buy the length that matches a standard gate valve. This provides greater options without revising the piping should you need to replace the valve in the future. Also, if you are replacing an existing gate with a ball valve, buy the pattern for the gate valve length.

Luciates,
NozzleTwister is correct. When speaking of plug valves, the terms short pattern and regular pattern apply. Plug valves were originally designed to provide a smooth flow pattern (regular pattern) to the flowing fluid, and they were widely used in new piping systems. The short pattern valves were designed as a retrofit for gate valves, having the same F to F dimension. This allowed the direct replacement of gate valves with plug valves without altering the pipe system.

The main difference to be aware of regarding short and regular pattern plug valves is that the short pattern plug valve produces much more pressure drop than the regular pattern plug valve. This may also be true with short pattern ball valves. It is something you should check.
