Has anyone ever made the move from Houston, TX to Portland, OR? I have an opportunity to move to the great pacific northwest (i love the scenery), but the logistics of moving are troublesome. Anyway, I am a civil engineer in public works infrastructure with the opportunity to work for an up and coming land/site development firm. Any opinions?

Last time I looked there were no Katrinas or Ritas in Portland, but lots of cycle lanes and pedestrian-friendly street.

I'd go to Portland in a heartbeat.

Then again, you're not me.

Cost of living is likely to be a shock. Of course a high cost of living generally indicates an area that people really want to live in.

My brother has lived in both places. He has been in Portland for about 10 years now and I can't recall ever hear him mentioning a desire to return to Houston.

Unless you happen to be related to the Armadillo family, you would probably enjoy the weather in Portland. However, there are some people that for unexplainable reasons do seem to prefer living in hot weather climates and will avoid regions of the country with temperate climates.

If you are one of the people that likes the hot weather, you probably will not like Portland. But other than the hot weather, there is no valid reason to live in the south.

you also mention that you are working in public works, but want to switch to land development. The money's good, but hope you enjoy the fast pace of development...
