I, again, am looking to my esteemed colleagues to assisting me put together a small database with respect to shoulder material requirements (unpaved) for national/interstate highways, state highways. In particular, I am looking for details as to Plasticity Index limitations, gradation specs, crushed and/or natural, stabilized (e.g., lime), requirement for turfing, etc. My thanks to all.

Can't help much with the details but you forgot one thing in your list.

Where are your "Danger Soft Shoulder" signs?

I couldn’t help myself.

Frivolity aside good luck in your endeavor.

No problem - don't usually use soft shoulder signs when we have 1.5m paved shoulder (same pavement design as main highway).

Since the embankmant/roadway is constructed as a unit, the material for the shoulders should be the same as the roadway.

Send an Email to each of the State DOT's. Explain you want to use their spec in an all inclusive data base. they will probably send it along. Or at least the web address where it can be found.

Thanks to all to date. Points taken. Am pursuing a number of them. [cheers]

cvg - agree that milled asphalt would be good. Some, though, have a feeling that if the public see this, they might get the impression that it is the actual road asphalt "breaking" up. Thanks!
