SHS to top plate weld - Calculation Throat 1

Hi guys,

In this situation, where we have a plate being welded along the radius of an SHS, which dimension would you use as calculation throat, to assess the weld strength?

Would you consider a1? a2? or something different?

if SHS is cold formed then No welding allowed at the corners (according to german codes)
reason is ...material hardening due to cold bend
not sure about other codes....

I dont know where in the world you are or what code you are using but from the AWS D1.1, 2010:
Table 2.1, Effective Size of Flare Groove Welds Filled Flush
Flare bevel groove welds made using SAW, SMAW or FCAW-S, Teff = 5/16 x radius*
Flare bevel groove welds made using GMAW, FCAW-G, Teff = 5/8 x radius*
*Radius of the flared bevel, in your case the corner of your HSS
