Shunt trip coil = trip coil?

Hey, experts:

I think shunt trip coil = trip coil for breakers. Is that right? But I couldn't find some doc to convience my coworkers. Very appreciate your help.

A shunt trip coil is used to trip a C/B from an external voltage source. Is this your co-worker's definition of a trip coil? If so, then they are the same.
 
Just something more:

With shunt tripping the coil is energized with a external supply, like tripping batteries, capasitor trip unit, etc.

With series tripping the coil is energized directly from the CT's, meaning that a CT supply a coil. The trip coil is in parallel with a N/C contact of the relay and both then in series with the relay element. Under normal conditions the current will flow through the N/C contact to the relay element, preventing the coil to operate. Under a fault condition, when the relay operate, the N/C contact will open, forcing the tripping coil to operate. Series tripping can just be used with electromecanical relays and each relay element must have its own tripping coil (3ph o/c relay will have three tripping coils)

On low voltage breakers the shunt coil is an extra put on the breaker to cause it to trip from an external source. Most low voltage breakers (less than 1000v)do not have shunt trip coils, but are tripped directly via a current coil. In the case of high voltage breakers that use external relays to trip the breaker the shunt trip and the would be the same.
 
Suggestion: Reference:
1. IEEE Std 100-2000 defines the shunt trip or shunt release (which is the same thing) as a release energized by a source of voltage. Note: The voltage may be derived from the main circuit or from an independent source.
 
Suggestion: The shunt-trip recloser is a recloser in which the tripping mechanism, by releasing the holding means, permits the main contacts to open. Therefore, the shunt trip does not actually open contacts, it just has a permissive function. Both the tripping mechanism and the contact opening mechanism derive operating energy from other than main circuit.
