I'm involved in purchasing a set of mixers for crude oil storage tank. The tank volume is around 98,500 cubic meter. The main purpose of the mixers is base Sediment & water control (cleaning). Deferent vendors offered different number of mixers with different required horsepower. I'm looking for some calculation or methods to size the mixers myself, so I'll be able to compare these offers.

Nice document Luis.

The type of mixers will also vary - Jet mixers, propeller mixers, rotating mixers, mixers inserted into manhole covers.

I'm surprised you want o mix up BS&W and not just draw the water off?

What sort of range of horsepower are you getting?

The document was helpful. Referencing hand book of industrial mixing, it suggested at least 0.4hp per each kbbl.
However, it's not enough, I need a more comprehensive estimation. I'll post it here if I found one.

The mixers have marine type propellers.
The estimated power varies from 30 Kw to 55 KW.

Tank mixers IMO are more art than science.

You can probably do some fancy CFD analysis but there's nothing like actual service and experiments on other tasks.

Still not sure why you want to stir up the water and dirt in the bottom of the tank instead of draining it off though....
