Is it advisable to use side withdrawal type filters in AHUs. Some manufacturers recommend that front withdrawal type filters should be used. This would necessitate a mixing box or chamber before the filters so as to have access. Any thoughts on the negative aspects of having side withdrawal filters ?

Side withdrawal option is used where there is a space constraint. The only downside I can think of is you need to pull it out to check its condition. It is also hard to see if there is any gap between filters. If you have a dedicated AHU room, why not use the AHU room as a return air plenum and get rid of the mixing box? Then you can use front withdrawal option and changing filters will be easy.

For side withdrawal, you rely on filters’ side-to-side seal for protection from leakage. For front withdrawal, each filter can be individually seated against the frame and gasket. There is less filter bypass. Side withdrawal filter racks will de-rate the bank as a whole and should be avoided if space allows.
