We were sold 40+ licenses by our reseller with the understanding that we wanted all of our licenses on a centralized license server. Come to find out, as we're setting this server up, all users need to be on the same domain! (a Siemens license requirement) Well, we have users on three domains, and our network structure is by design... We have no plans to consolidate to one domain, and in fact, it was designed the way it is for a reason.

I'm wondering if anyone else has run into a similar problem (multiple domains & trying to use Flex licensing) and if so, what did you do to get around this technicality? We're not interested in doing cloud licensing as the whole point was to lower the total number of licenses by allowing them to float. Cloud licensing requires each user to have their own license.

When you say that your people are on three different servers, are you referring to where the software is installed and where their files are located or are you talking about three independent locations without a common link between them? While I'm not familiar with Solid Edge itself, if the licensing set-up is the same as we had for NX, you should all be able to use a single license server even if your people are running software and archiving on separate servers/workstations.

If all of you users, regardless of domain, can access the license server, then you should not have any problems.

If they are on unique domains to prevent cross-talk between systems, then you will have to work with your reseller to separate the quantity into 3 different sold-to IDs to be run on 3 different license servers. You'll only be able to float the licenses assigned to each server, so you do run the risk of having too many licenses on one server and not enough on another. Not an ideal situation, but probably as close as you can get if my assumptions are true.

FYI: Siemens typically charges a small fee for license transfers. So, if you ever find yourself with excess licenses on one server and short on another, you can transfer them without having to buy more seats. If you do have to split up your initial purchase, you should be able to negotiate a no-fee transfer this first time since your reseller didn't understand the requirements.
