Thanks for the link it was most helpful. I will contact Siemens rep.

You will also need to determine which S7 series you want to work with. The S7-200 is what they (we) call "micro-automation" and has it's own software package, Micro/Win 32. In the US, the Micro-automation products are supported by the PD&C (Power, Distribution & Controls) group. The larger more powerful PLCs, the S7-300 and S7-400 series, use Step 7 software and are supported by the Automation and Drives group. The programming looks similar, but if you are not using the higher functionality in the 300 and 400 series, Micro/Win 32 is a lot easier to use.

Here is a quick way to find resources for either group by entering the product you are working with;

JRaef,
I am working with both S7-300/S7-400 series PLC. I am new to Siemens PLC and I would appreciate any tips from you. Thanks for the response and the information.

Sorry, I only work with the S7-200 series so I'll need to defer to the Automation and Drives guys on that.

If you are looking for formal training classes, here is the schedule. Training for the NY area is apparently handled by the main Siemens headquarters in Norcross GA. I recommend starting with the S7 TIA Programming 1 class.

Other than that, you can contact whichever of these guys is closer to see if they know of any training programs closer to you, i.e. distributor sponsored classes;

cafe247,

try this book:

"AUTOMATING WITH STEP 7 IN LAD AND FBD, FOR SIEMENS PROGRAMMABLE CONTROLLERS TYPE S7 300/400"
Author :Hans Berger.
ISBN:389-578-1703

The author is (or was) a siemens engineer and has at least 3 or 4 books dedicated to Siemens Step-7.

Cheers,

artecerv,
I will pick that up this weekend. I appreciate the tip. I also signed up for training class in Atlanta(Norcross)in April. Until then I will be digging into the book you recommended.
Thanks,

I learned the basics of the 315-2DP programming and implementation using the Berger books, the Siemens online help, and their tech support line.

I'd also highly recommend PLCSIM, both for learning and for debugging your programs before you load them into the hardware.

Also, do some digging around on the web and you'll find some S7 projects that you can download and fiddle with.

I am fortunate to have a spare S7-300/S7-400 for tinkering around with. I will also download SIM you recommended.
Thanks for the information.
